  Work begins on 12-storey apart...

One of Northampton's most ambitious modern living schemes is now under way at Woolmonger Street.

Westleigh Developments has begun work on the impressive 12-storey apartment block, which will feature two levels of basement parking. It will be the tallest and most complex building project ever undertaken by the Leicester-based construction company.

Excavation for the basement car parks began in November and is now complete. Prior to this an archeological dig had revealed evidence of habitation back to Saxon times. A team from Northampton Archeology spent several weeks examining and recording early remains.

Foundation work which consists of 402 concrete piles which are 16m deep, commenced on January 30th and work on the concrete frame will start within the next two weeks. The project is expected to be complete in summer/autumn next year.
The multi-million pound development on behalf of Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) will provide 135 flats of varying tenures.

Special Projects Manager Ian Price, who joined Westleigh early last year with the specific role of overseeing schemes like the Woolmonger Street development said it was one of the most exciting projects he had handled and would be a real architectural boost to the city.

“It is the sort of project that needs a lot more in terms of time and resources than most building projects so it needs exclusive management,” he said. “It is the first time I have tackled anything quite this big. It is going to be an impressive looking building when it is finished.”

“It's a real challenge, which Westleigh has been happy to meet head on.”

Gary Turner of NCHA said the project was also an exciting flagship scheme for NCHA.

“It will provide a mixed-tenure solution to Northampton Borough Council's housing needs. Westleigh and NCHA have worked together to arrive at a construction figure and now the challenge is for both parties to make concentrated efforts to deliver this scheme on time and within budget,” he said.
