Westleigh is celebrating after attaining ISO14001 accreditation. ISO14001 is an internationally recognised environmental management standard presented to companies that have demonstrated compliance and have made commitments to environmentally responsible business practices. In Westleigh’s case, the scope of certification encompasses its office based administration activities, on-site construction and all processes at its timber frame manufacturing division, Westframe. The accreditation assessment was carried out over three days by certification body Moody International, with which Westleigh currently holds its existing ISO9001:2008 Quality Management Standard. Craig Johnson, Environment & Quality Manager at Westleigh, comments, “We’ve been working towards ISO14001 since July 2007, having liaised with Groundwork Leicester as our environmental consultants in the first instance. The decision to commit to ISO14001 came after we launched our environmental commitment, Westleigh GreenHouse. We’ve implemented numerous new procedures, and updated existing ones in order to meet the rigorous requirements of the standard. The main emphasis is on resource and energy efficiency, waste management and pollution prevention control.” Implementing an Environmental Management System is a systematic way to control the effects that a company has on the environment. Cost savings can be made through improved efficiency and productivity. These are achieved by detecting ways to minimise waste, increase reuse and recycling activities, in disposing of any remaining waste more effectively and by encouraging greater energy efficiency. Achieving the ISO14001 accreditation was a key objective of Westleigh GreenHouse which is our open commitment to take environmental issues into account in the planning and day-to-day running of our business. These range from the efficient and responsible use of natural resources to raising staff awareness of the environmental impact that its activities could potentially have on the environment.
